Our new lunar cycle begins with New Moon in Cancer,
June 22 , 2009, 3:35 pm EDT
'Tis the second official day of summer, and yet another cool and rainy day in New Hampshire. But I'm grateful that the sunshine broke through the clouds and the expected rain held off until after our Summer Solstice rite on Saturday, so we were able to light the Midsummer fires in the center of the stone circle, as planned.
This has been the rainiest spring I can remember, and summer is not looking much different, at least not yet. It's rained all day today, with more predicted for the week ahead. With all this moisture, the foliage in

the surrounding forest is so thick that it's as if our house and yard are surrounded by a wall of leaves , with not a glimpse of the road or neighbors to be seen until we get to the end of the driveway. And New Moon is in a water sign!

New Moon , 1 Cancer 30, June 22 at 3:35 pm, EDT
Cardinal water—Cancer, first of the three water signs, with Scorpio and Pisces, all sharing "emotional" as a primary keyword. It's a nurturing sign, closely associated with home and mother. I've often suggeted house cleansing as a ritual for this Moon sign... now that I'm thinking about the column, after having reminded myself just minutes ago that—aack, it's New Moon tomorrow—I realize that I've spent most of the day doing just that—house cleaning—clearing out stuff that's no longer needed to make space. I must be feeling my own lunar return approaching. The mood struck this morning— MUST clear that clutter in my studio so I can work more effectively. It does feel good to have it restored to order again! So, charging it with new energy? Yes, that, too, would be a great way to make a new start for this new lunar phase cycle!

Ritual for New Moon in Cancer
Begin with the preliminary work I've just described: declutter your chosen area, be it your entire home or office or particular room, then sweep it, dust it...whatever. Then do a magical cleasing and charging the room(and with it yourself) for your intended use of the space. I'll also tell you what my favorite house cleansng & blessing recipe has in it:

1 part frankincense
1 part sandalwood
1 part wood betone
2 parts lavender buds
4 parts rose petals
1/2 part basil
1 part copal
2 incense spoonfuls of magnolia oil

(by that I mean small demitasse size spoons—I have a few that I use for mixing incense and oils.) For the basic house or room cleansing, begin by lighting a white candle as you ask for spiritual blessing of your intent. Then blend and bless salt and water, representing the elements of earth and water, then sprinkle lightly by dipping your fingers into the salted water, and then flicking it all around the area moving sunwise. Next light the incense (fire and air) and walk sunwise again, wafting the smoke and scent. Finally, carry the lighted white candle of Spirit around. Focus on blessing the area with your intent for it and for yourself (and others, if applicable) within this space. Pause at each opening (window or door) and trace a solar cross with the candles, repeating As above, so below, as within, so without, as the Universe, so the soul.

Astrologically, this New Moon includes a large number of aspects, extending into early Wednesday morning and ending with Moon trine Uranus. Within the many lunar aspects there's Mars trine Saturn on Monday (10:45 am EDT) and Sun opposite Pluto at 3:39 am EST Tuesday. Lunar aspects are a mixture of cooperating and challenging, but overall I think the potential is excellent for effective work and changes for the better.I'd say don't waste this New Moon—use it for a productive new beginning.

Crescent Moon, 19 Leo 34, June 25 at 8:30 pm EDT
Moon in Leo looks like a time that could live up to the Crescent theme of "two steps forward, one step back," with aspects mostly challenging. Something may need to be throught through again, with some changes made, but if you have to shift gears a bit, then do it. This is an intermediate passing phase. Keep that New Moon theme and its goals in in your sights and move on.
But, I see that Moon opposes first Jupiter, then Neptune, still moving conjunct at 26 Aquarius...slowly, both retrograde. This aspect separates for awhile, but recurs late in the year when Jupiter goes direct again. So, it has been with us for while already and will remain with us for months to come, especially felt by those of us with strong emphasis in our charts on the late degrees of the fixed signs: Aquarius, Leo, Scorpio, Taurus. This includes President Obama. (Node-Uranus 27 and 25 Leo, and MC/IC for published birth certificate 28 Scorpio-Taurus, 18 Aquarius rising, 12 Leo Sun. It's spiritually idealistic combination, Jupiter-Neptune. Neptune at best is idealistic and inspired, but is also prone to delusion and deception. Jupiter is expansive both for good or ill—enthusiastic, optimistic. The combination can be hypnotic, inspiring hope...or impossible expectations. Obviously, the financial risk within the general mood of all this is pretty high, and an old adage comes to mind that is worth some serious thought and conservative plannng ahead: "Don't risk what you can't afford to lose."

First Quarter Moon, 7 Libra 52, June 29 at 7:28 am EDT
The "crisis of action" string of aspects includes three trines of Moon: first to Mercury, tehn Neptune, then Jupiter. At best it could be romantic, but in practical mundane matters, most likely its not so easy as one's dreams or fantasies may wish it to be. if its romance, enjoy. If it's a practical decision or action you contemplate taking, then this little ritual ahead of time can invoke stability and spiritual guidance.

To clarify your intent and your course of action, first call on the elements for what you need and then to your Center for spiritual guidance. Take a few moments after each call to listen for the message of Spirit within, and by the completion of this rite, you should have a much clearer vision of what you want to do and the best way to proceed.

To the East I turn for clarity, for balance and freedom of thought
To the South I turn for energy, strength of convictions and the will to stand for them.
To the West I turn for compassion, intuition and beauty of Spirit
To the North I turn for stability and discernment.
May that which I manifest in my world be for the highest good.
In my Center, God/dess be within me. Spirit of my highest Truth,
I open myself to your message and trust in your wisdom.

Gibbous Moon, 26 Scorpio 31, July 3 at 3:19 am EDT
Although this phase is traditionally one of working toward a fulfillment that is almost within reach, this particular phase has a complexity of aspects that suggest it may be better to just enjoy the July 4th holiday. If you're feeling or emotional, then you may be reflecting some of the potential Moon's squares to that Jupiter-Neptune-Chiron conjunction, and maybe magnifying a situation more than it deserves. Be kind to yourself (and by reflection, others) through the weekend. Do something relaxing that you enjoy. Mercury & Venus change signs before the eclipse and Mars squares Jupiter-Neptune-Chiron on Monday. This, too, could reflect confusion—or action that could be regretted later, or maybe just wasted energy. So, the lead up to to the eclipse suggests caution. After tomorrow's eclipse, the rest of the week looks like smoother sailing.

Full Moon, 15 Capricorn 24, July 7 at 5:21 am EDT
Lunar Eclipse, 15 Capricorn 32, 5:37 am EDT
Capricorn is a grounded, practical Earth sign, associated with business and substance. That this New Moon is also an eclipse means that it's theme is much longer lasting than the usual two-week period we associated with Full Moon themes. I remember one lunar eclipse that was in very close aspect to major configurations in my chart from which I could associate developments over a period of the two years following. So, the energy of this eclipse may be with you for quite some time to come, especiallly if its degree is close to your natal personal points (Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Midheaven). Focus that energy toward progress and organization in whatever work you do, or perhaps toward a plan for consolidating resources and improving prospects in this time of recession.

Ritual for Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn
Prior to your actual ritual, spend whatever time you need in planning and organization of how you will improve your situation. If there's clutter and disorganization where you work, get that cleaned up first. Then, on a pad of paper or journal you will use to organize your plan, write this at the top:

I am strong in the faith that Spirit is with me
My good is at hand now.

This little aphorism is good to repeat at the beginning of work, and also just before sleeping. Make it a short, but very affirming meditation.

Write down what you have, and what resources you have toward improvement. Work out a realistic plan for how you can improve your situation. Then commit yourself to the plan. Go outdoors if you can when you can see eclipse and/or Full Moon, or meditate by candlelight if visibility outdoors is not possible. Offer your plan and your commitment to follow it to Goddess:

Oh gracious Goddess, bless this plan
Infuse it with your energy!
Strengthen my will to follow through
Toward growth in my prosperity.
To you I pledge to do my best
Strong in faith, my goal to see
To work for growth and highest good,
This is my will, so mote it be!

Disseminating Moon, 4 Pisces 20, July 11 at 8:23 am EDT
This is the phase for sharing or for spreading the word, whatever that may mean to you. Mars enters communicative Gemini on July 11 at 10:56 pm EDT, and Sun is conjuct Mercury on Monday, July 13 at 10:16 pm EDT. These plus other aspects of this phase do suggest favorable prospects for sharing ideas, perhaps promotional work.

Last Quarter Moon, 23 Aries 03, July 15 at 5:53 am EDT
This phase has mostly soft aspects other than for squares of Moon to Jupiter and Neptune again on Friday. It rather feels like its theme suggests. Energy for primary themes of this phase cycle are winding down, and we may be reconsidering some of them, thinking of what else...

Balsamic Moon, 11 Gemini 23, July 18 at 5:38 pm EDT
Again soft aspects, for the most part. Saturday night may be romantic. Moon moves into Cancer late Sunday night, which suggests that some house cleaning could be a good thing for Monday, followed by a relaxing bath and a nice cup of tea. Clear out what is no longer needed in anticipation of Tuesday's New Moon and Solar Eclipse in the very last degree of Cancer.
